English Language & Literature

A- Level English Literature

GCE A/AS Level or Equivalent Level 3

Overview

We are a department of subject specialists and not-so-secret bookworms with a wealth of teaching experience between us. Our interests lie in both language and literature, and all planning, teaching and assessment is collaborative and complementary. Study of English at the top of the school is as thrilling and enriching and inspiring as you would expect, and we have an enviable track record of Oxbridge success.

By studying English Language you will learn about how we acquire language as a child and have opportunities to develop your own creative writing skills. In studying Literature, you will explore the psychology of characters and the motives of writers, consider the political, social and historical contexts in which texts are written and read, and refine your skills of analysis and debate. Beyond the classroom we offer regular trips to the theatre, the Slam Jam poetry competition, and a popular student-run magazine, The Chattler, to name but three examples of the array of opportunities available.
