Exploring, Investigating, Understanding

At KEVIGS, Science is taught through a high-quality, carefully sequenced curriculum that helps students understand not just what we know, but how we know it. Our approach develops strong scientific knowledge while encouraging students to appreciate the evidence behind ideas and to apply their understanding through practical investigations.

We promote curiosity, problem-solving, and scientific thinking, giving students a hands-on approach to learning. This helps them develop the investigative skills needed to work scientifically with confidence.

Curriculum

Key Stage 3

Our KS3 Science curriculum is designed to develop high-achieving learners by building strong foundations in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Students are encouraged to become independent, resilient scientists, confident in using the working scientifically skills that underpin success at GCSE, A Level, and beyond.

Lessons focus on:

  • Developing enquiry and investigative skills
  • Applying scientific knowledge to practical contexts
  • Building confidence in planning experiments, analysing data, and evaluating evidence

These skills are transferable and valuable in everyday life, helping students think critically and logically about the world around them.

Key Stage 4

At KS4, students follow the AQA GCSE Science specifications, where KS3 knowledge and skills are revisited, strengthened, and extended. The curriculum is taught at a pace appropriate to the learner, ensuring challenge and support for all students.

All students have the opportunity to study Triple Science where this is the most suitable pathway, allowing deeper exploration of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics and providing excellent preparation for further scientific study.

Enrichment

The Science Department is committed to supporting every student in reaching their full potential and offers a range of enrichment opportunities beyond the classroom, including:

  • Regular workshops to extend understanding and build confidence
  • A well-resourced Astronomy Club, exploring space and astrophysics
  • An innovative Drone Club, allowing students to apply scientific and technological knowledge in exciting, real-world contexts

Curriculum Maps

Curriculum Maps show what students will learn in each subject and when. They give students a clear sense of progression and help parents understand how knowledge and skills are built over time across the school year.
