Building Skills and Confidence
At KEVIGS, we aim to create resilient learners with a broad range of mathematical skills and the confidence to know which method to use in any situation. We are passionate about the beauty of number, algebra, geometry, and calculus, and strive to inspire a sense of awe in the symmetry and elegance of different mathematical methods.
Our three main goals are:
-
Develop understanding and problem-solving skills across a range of mathematical topics.
-
Build confidence and resilience so students can approach challenges with persistence.
-
Foster appreciation and curiosity for the power and beauty of mathematics in the world around us.
Curriculum
Key Stage 3
Our KS3 curriculum takes a topic-focused, mastery approach, ensuring students develop fluency in a wide range of mathematical skills before KS4. This approach allows students to explore concepts deeply, build confidence, and tackle increasingly complex problems as they progress.
Key Stage 4
At KS4, students follow the Edexcel specification, revisiting and enhancing skills learned at KS3 while developing new problem-solving techniques. The curriculum is tailored to the pace of each learner, and high achievers can challenge themselves further through the Level 2 Further Maths qualification. Students consolidate their fluency across number, algebra, geometry, statistics, and mechanics, preparing them thoroughly for future study.
Enrichment
As well as excellent classroom teaching, the department runs a number of trips every year such as visiting Bletchley Park and lectures designed to inspire those students intending to study a STEM subject at university or a more technical apprenticeship.
Curriculum Maps
Curriculum Maps show what students will learn in each subject and when. They give students a clear sense of progression and help parents understand how knowledge and skills are built over time across the school year.
