Cooking Skills for Life

Food Technology at KEVIGS is a practical, creative, and exciting subject that helps students develop essential life skills they can use beyond the classroom. The curriculum builds confidence in the kitchen while exploring how food choices impact health, wellbeing, and everyday life.

Curriculum

Throughout Food Technology, students will:

  • Learn to use a wide range of kitchen tools, processes, and equipment safely and confidently
  • Understand and apply different cooking methods, such as baking, boiling, grilling, and frying
  • Develop a variety of practical cooking techniques while preparing food
  • Learn about healthy eating, including macro and micronutrients
  • Produce well-presented, high-quality dishes
  • Evaluate their own work by reviewing taste, texture, appearance, and nutritional value

Key Stage 3

In KS3, students follow a hands-on and engaging curriculum:

  • Year 7 students prepare and cook 9 different dishes
  • Year 8 students prepare and cook 10 different dishes

These dishes are carefully selected to develop a wide range of skills and knowledge, enabling students to cook confidently at home. Lessons focus on food hygiene, safety, and nutrition, giving students the confidence to experiment with new recipes and ingredients independently.

By the end of KS3, students will have developed valuable life skills that prepare them for the future, including the ability to cook a variety of healthy, balanced meals.

Enrichment & Competitions

Students have the opportunity to take part in a range of exciting enrichment activities, including:

  • School Bake Offs and MasterChef-style competitions
  • National initiatives such as eating more fish
  • Participation in Jamie Oliver–inspired competitions and other national food campaigns

These opportunities encourage creativity, teamwork, and resilience, while helping students develop confidence and pride in their practical work.
