Discover Drama
The aim of the Drama department at KEVIGS is to equip students with a holistic combination of practical, subject-specific skills and more general life skills. We have designed a challenging curriculum through KS3 to ensure that those students who wish to progress to Drama at KS4 and 5 have the required skills, knowledge and understanding to succeed.
Our Aims
Through the Drama curriculum, we aim to:
- Develop creative and collaborative skills
- Develop performance skills
- Enable students to analyse and evaluate existing play-texts and performances
- Develop the ability to draw upon appropriate drama vocabulary and terminology.
Furthermore, Drama at KEVIGS prepares students for careers in several fields due to the transferable skills we develop. Students are encouraged and supported to develop:
- Inter-personal and collaborative skills
- Effective communication skills
- A sense of self-awareness.
Curriculum
Key Stage 3
Our KS3 curriculum includes:
- Introduction to basic stagecraft skills
- Exploring genres and styles
- Exploring texts and devising original performances
Students share their work regularly with one another and encourage one another by offering peer feedback.
Key Stage 4
At KS4 and KS5, the department follows the Edexcel GCSE and A Level specification for Drama.
- Devising – Students are given a stimulus and must devise a piece of theatre. Assessment includes performance and a written portfolio.
- Text in Performance – Students prepare two extracts (monologues or duologues) for performance, assessed by a visiting examiner.
- Theatre Makers in Practice – Students interpret a set text in performance (our chosen text: DNA by Dennis Kelly) and evaluate a live theatre performance
Extra-Curricular Opportunities
In addition to classroom teaching, we offer:
- Extra-curricular activities and performance opportunities
- Periodic school shows
- Year 10 theatre visits organised by the department
- Visits from professional theatre companies, in collaboration with the English department
These opportunities help students apply their learning in real-world contexts and develop confidence both on and off the stage.
Curriculum Maps
Curriculum Maps show what students will learn in each subject and when. They give students a clear sense of progression and help parents understand how knowledge and skills are built over time across the school year.
