Encouraging Excellence, Nurturing Talent in Every Individual
Welcome to King Edward's and to our website.
King Edward's is a very special community built on firm family foundations of trust and friendship. Our relationships here are best described as positive and natural and they lack the stuffiness and formality often associated with other Grammar Schools. It is this more liberal heritage that many Ludensians are exceptionally proud of and it is one of the many reasons that parents cite when they trust us to educate their son or daughter.
We are equally proud of our diverse heritage. King Edward's serves many different communities that include Louth and its surrounding villages, The Wolds and Horncastle to the South, Mablethorpe to the East, Market Rasen to the West and Grimsby to the North: over 500 pupils a day travel by bus into our vibrant and thriving community. King Edward's is a school for everyone where ability matters more than your postcode, the car you drive, your religious beliefs, your heritage or the job that you do.
This might all sound very surprising for a Grammar School that is older than many of the largest public schools in the country: we are older than Eton and Harrow, Oakham and Uppingham. Our heritage stretches back to 1551 when we were refounded; but the school's origins go further to the 13th century. Music and a choral tradition remain crucial elements of our community and over a third of the school is actively involved in music in one form or another. We have close relationships with St James' Church in Louth and we come together to reinforce our commitment to family and to song at St James' on a regular basis.
Ultimately we are an academic school and exceptionally proud of our achievements. King Edward's is one of the top 200 state schools in the country, we have been identified by OFSTED as providing an Outstanding education for young people and the Sutton Trust has ranked us as the second most successful state school in Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire for sending students on to University.
However, we believe passionately that our job is to create well rounded academically able children who are confident and interesting individuals who have a spark and a passion for more than just academia: all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. What other school can boast of a dedicated Combined Cadet Force committed to offering opportunities in Leadership and outstanding life experiences through the Army and RAF?: our pupils genuinely fly! Our standards in both Music and Drama are professional and many of our past students have gone on to forge careers in opera, theatre and as professional musicians. Our annual musical is open to the general public and performed on a professional stage at the Riverhead Theatre: our children literally run the show. In Sport we achieve regular accolades at county level and have pupils who represent not only the county but the country.
I hope I have given you a flavour of our community and of our family. However, please do come and visit because only then can you truly see the wealth of opportunity and meet some of our Sixth Formers who will tour you round our school: they are our best ambassadors. For a tour or a visit then please do contact my PA Rhona Adam 01507 600456.
I wish you the very best in your decision making.
With kind regards
