Encouraging Excellence, Nurturing Talent
The standards the students reach are exceptionally high in Key Stages 3 and 4 and the progress the students make is good and improving. OFSTED
All Schools follow the National Curriculum at KS3 and offer the normal range of subjects English, Mathematics, Science and Languages, Art, ICT and our Prospectus and Option Booklets give you the full details of these subjects. At King Edward's the difference is that:
We teach at a deeper level to stimulate and challenge able children.
We specialise in Science, Mathematics and Languages which gives our curriculum a distinctive flavour.
We operate a foundation two year Key Stage Three Curriculum in Years 7& 8 and..........
an enriched three year GCSE experience.
Departments begin GCSE courses in Year 9 which allows pupils to experience subjects in depth and
enables staff to take pupils beyond the GCSE specifications.
All pupils study one or two languages (We believe that a good education requires an understanding of
other cultures and remain one of the few School to have continued to insist on pupils sitting a language)
All pupils study the full Double or Triple Award Science.
King Edward's places a strong emphaisis on academic enrichment. We don't sit children early for subjects and we don't encourage acceleration. Instead we encourage children to explore subjects in depth. We believe education should be broad and deep not fast and thin.
We achieve this depth through:
our enriched three year GCSE curriculum
our Curriculum Enrichment Days (see below)
An emphasis on taking four subjects for two years in the Sixth Form
Sixth Formers also undertake an Extended, University style piece of research
All Sixth Formers also take Critical Thinking at AS Level and have the option to continue it at A2
At King Edward's we operate a series of Curriculum Enrichment Days when the entire school is involved in some form of academic enrichment. This allows departments to plan longer sessions to explore certain topics in depth through:
Lectures, Talks and Extended Experiments
Activity Days spent on a single challenge
Trips and visits
Cross Curricular challenges so children can explore the links between subjects.
Creative days spent on Art, Music and Drama
This flexible day also allows each Head of Year to run an Academic Review Day so that tutors can spend quality time with their tutees discussing academic progress.
